Basic filters
Filters with a country in the heading are available only in that country’s database.
Company name
The Company name filter finds companies by name with four options:
starts with
contains
doesn’t start with
doesn’t contain
You can add several names to one filter. A company matches if its name fits any of them.
For example, with the keyword Nice:
starts with finds companies that have any single word in their name starting with
Nice. NiceCompany and Company Nice both appear in the results.contains finds companies that have
Niceanywhere in their name. This includes both previous examples, plus CompanyNice (Niceis not at the start of a word) and even SonicExcellence.doesn’t start with and doesn’t contain are the opposites of the previous two: you get every company that does not match the criteria. A common use is to exclude holding companies with doesn’t contain =
Holding.
💡 Here's another cool hack if, for example, you would want to find all prospects that mention AI in their name: starts with = AI *. Note the asterisk and the blank space at the end - they are required to avoid getting false positives such as all words that contain the letters AI (air, mail etc.) by pointing that there should be no letters after the AI part. The starts with logic in turn makes sure there are no letters before it.
While useful in itself, the logic isn't entirely perfect. For example, it skips prospects that have attached the AI part into their name - so something like ProAI would get excluded.
To find one specific company, the search bar at the top of the page is usually faster than the Company name filter.
Legal entity
The Legal entity filter is used often, because target groups are commonly built around one legal entity type. The most common choices are limited companies: Osakeyhtiö (OY) in Finland, AB in Sweden, AS (Aksjeselskap) in Norway, Aktieselskab in Denmark, and Limited company or Private limited company in the Netherlands. Use is not to exclude entities such as sole proprietorships or municipalities.
The filter lists every legal entity that official registries attach to at least one active company. The options depend on the source data and Vainu does not normalize them, so the names vary between country databases, as the limited company examples above show.
Correspondence language (Finland only)
The Correspondence language filter is available in the Finnish database. It finds companies by the language that was selected as the official correspondence language when the company or sole proprietor was set up.
Select Finnish or Swedish to find companies with that correspondence language.
Date founded and Registration
Date founded and Registration are date filters. For each, you can select one or more years, or a date range.
Date founded (previously called Foundation) looks at the day when the company was founded. It is available in all databases.
Registration looks at the day when the company was last registered to the national business register. It is available in the Swedish, Norwegian and Danish databases, but not in Finland. In Finland, use the Registers filters below.
These two dates are often similar. Companies can be de-registered and re-registered, which updates their registration date but not their date founded.
Each filter has two tabs:
Year lets you select one or several years to find companies founded or registered in any of them.
Date lets you select one date range that spans as long a period as you need.
For example, to find all companies founded between 2020 and 2022, select 2020, 2021 and 2022 in the Year tab. Alternatively, use the Date tab to select the period from January 1st 2020 until December 31st 2022. Use the Date tab for periods that do not start and end on year boundaries.
Switch between the Year and Date tabs at the top of the date selector. In the Date tab, use the arrow buttons to move between months, or click the month or the year to jump faster.
Teleoperators (Sweden only)
The Teleoperators filter is available in the Swedish database. It finds companies that use a specific teleoperator.
Select several teleoperators to find companies that use any of them. Switch the filter to is not to find companies that do not use specific teleoperators.
The list is long, so use the search field inside the filter. The raw data lists some teleoperators under more than one name. When in doubt, select all similar options.
Registers filters (Finland only)
The Registers filter group is available in the Finnish database. Each filter checks whether a company is listed in one official Finnish register.
All register filters work the same way:
is finds companies that are currently listed in the register.
is not finds companies that are not currently listed in the register.
Optionally, select a date range to limit the results by the date when the company was registered to that register.
Filter in Vainu | Finnish name |
Trade register | Kaupparekisteri |
Foundation register | Säätiörekisteri |
Association register | Yhdistysrekisteri |
Tax Administration | Verohallinnon perustiedot |
Prepayment register | Ennakkoperintärekisteri |
VAT-liability register | ALV-velvollisuus |
Employer register | Työnantajarekisteri |
💡 To include only companies that are currently in the Finnish Trade register, add Trade register and set it to is.
Employer register replaces the Employer registration filter that used to be in the Basic group. Before, you could only show all companies listed or not listed in the Employer Register. It now works like the other register filters.
